ISBE Prevention Initiative (PI)

What is the Prevention Initiative Program?

The Prevention Initiative Program is a special program funded by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). It focuses on providing high-quality early childhood care and education for infantstoddlers, and two-year-olds. The goal of the program is to help young children get a great start in life by supporting their development in the first few years, which are the most important for learning and growth.

How Does This Program Help My Child?

  • Developmental Support: The program helps children from birth to age 3 grow in all areas—social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development.

  • School Readiness: Even though your child may be too young for school, this program helps them get ready for preschool and kindergarten by promoting skills like problem-solving, language development, and interacting with others.

  • Family Engagement: The program also works closely with parents and caregivers to support family life and help you understand your child’s needs. It offers resources and guidance to help you be the best parent or caregiver.

  • Focus on Prevention: It helps identify and support children who might need extra help early on—before any problems become bigger. The earlier a child gets support, the better their chance of success later in life.

What Does the Program Offer?

  • Quality Care and Education: Local schools and child care centers provide programs that focus on the growth of your child. These programs are designed to create a safe, caring, and stimulating environment where your child can learn and play.

  • Support for At-Risk Families: The Prevention Initiative focuses on helping families who may face challenges, like low income or limited access to early childhood resources. This means your family can get the support it needs, no matter what challenges you might be facing.

  • Parent Resources and Support: You'll get access to programs that can help you improve your parenting skills, understand your child’s needs, and build a positive, nurturing home environment.

How Can My Child Benefit from This Program?

  • Early Intervention: If your child is at risk for developmental delays, the program connects early intervention to make sure they get the support they need.

  • School Readiness: Your child will be better prepared for school, as they will learn essential skills like talking, listening, following instructions, and working with others.

  • Stronger Parent-Child Relationship: The program encourages close parent-child bonding and positive parenting practices that can last a lifetime.
